Occupational Asthma Claims

What is Occupational Asthma?

Some substances that exist in the workplace can cause Asthma. If you think that your asthma has been caused by something that you have been exposed to at work, then it maybe possible for you to make a claim for compensation against your Employers. They have a duty to ensure that your work environment is a safe one and as such, may be liable if you sustain any form of illness such as Asthma.

What causes Occupational Asthma?

There are numerous jobs in which you might be exposed to certain chemicals which can cause Asthma. If a claim for compensation is to be made, then you will need to be able to prove that whichever substance you have been exposed to has been the cause of your Asthma either developing or becoming worse. The most common types of industry are as follows;

- Accidents at work – Electronics Industry
Dust from the latex rubber which is used can cause Occupational Asthma. Employers in this industry are under a duty to ensure that all Employees are provided with the correct personal protective equipment such as facial masks.

- Accidents at work – Chemical Industry
Any job where an Employee is working with noxious or corrosive chemicals can cause chemicals to be inhaled and Asthma may result from this exposure. Employers are under a strict duty to ensure that Employees are not exposed to dangerous substance and as such, if Asthma does develop, there may be grounds for a claim for compensation

- Accidents at work – Carpentry, Joinery and Sawmilling
It is extremely common for Employees that work in this industry to sustain Asthma and as such it is important that any occupational illness such as this is reported as soon as the first symptoms become apparent. As in all industries, the employers are under obliged to provide the correct protective equipment to ensure that the risk of exposure is minimised.
